Desert Sentinel

Got this shot from an overnight foray into the desert. I was searching for that classic-looking saguaro--quintessential Southwest. After stumbling around in the thorniest place on earth for a bit, I came across this guy, and got the composition i was after. I suppose I'll call it "Desert Sentinel", that's what jumped out at me. yeah...I'm going with it.

Hot-Springin' on the late night! Turkey Creek Hot Springs

Click the images to enlarge.
Turkey Creek Hotsprings at night.  The pools are lit by a flashlight i rigged for underwater use.

Soaking in a natural hotspring is more than just a relaxing float in nature's jacuzzi--it's a science, really.   Creating the perfect temperature with a mixture of the naturally flowing creek and the scalding, 160 degree water that seeps from the rock is a feet of human ingenuity and engineering.   Over the course of our 2 night stay at the hotsprings themselves, my hiking comrades and I developed a solid method of temperature control.  To do this, we would build rock dams around the hotspring intake, while letting some creek water gently flow in.  I earned the nickname "beaver" for my masterful dam work.  I like to keep the soaking temp around 105 degrees, perfect for a late night soak while passing around the whiskey--warm on the outside, warm on the inside.
Turkey Creek Hot Springs, located in New Mexico's Gila National Forest, is a remote and secluded natural hotspring, that requires a good amount of off-trail scrambling to get to, so it gets little traffic as far as hot springs go.  When the natural seeps of hot water mix with Turkey Creek, it provides an unbeatable, luxurious, 100%  natural hotspring soak, whoa buddy.  5 stars!  We pretty much had the place to ourselves.

My bed for two nights.   Not a bad view, but the darn waterfall never turned off.  Can't a guy get some peace and quiet?

Just below the soaking pool was a picturesque little swimming hole, complete with a waterfall.  The temp in here was about 85 degrees thanks to the hotsprings just above it, making it perfect for a dip at any time of day or night.

Red Spotted Toad.
We had the pleasure of having a good buddy, Austin join us for the trip.  He works for New Mexico Game and Fish as a herpetologist, and had some work in Turkey Creek looking for the threatened species, the Chiricahua Leopard Frog.  Though he never found any, it's always cool to have him around to identify anything we run across, like this red spotted toad.  I love the eyes.

We also came across a Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake, identifiable by the banded markings--red on black, you're OK, Jack.  Red on Yellow, you're a dead fellow.  The poisonous coral snake looks a lot like it, but has yellow bands next to the red ones.  The kingsnake is harmless, but the coral snake can kill you.

Overall, we spent 4 nights in the Gila Wilderness, a truly wild place.  We covered about 20 miles, most of it off-trail scrambling, and although we didn't see any big mammals, we saw signs of cougar and bear in the form of scat, tracks, and freshly upturned boulders.   During our stay, we only saw one other group of people.  There is really nothing more rewarding than a long day of hiking capped off with a relaxing soak in natures jacuzzi.   Hot-tubbin' on the late night!  At turkey creek hotsprings.   Awesome.

Landscape in Motion

Some HD video for my series, Landscape in Motion. Took me forever to figure out the correct way to process it for HD output, but I'm happy with the results, they should look real nice full-screen.
This is a scene from a little lake north of Lake Mary in Flagstaff. Make sure the volume is up.

Here's what's making all the racket. The western chorus frog. Impressive vocals

Landscape in Motion: South Kaibab Trail

This is part one of a series of video's I'm calling: Landscape in Motion.  Kinda cheesy, I know, but the idea is to utilize the HD video capabilities of my digital SLR.  I compose the images the same way I would a still photograph, but instead of taking a single image, I record the scene.   Once I've built up more videos, I will make a tab with all of them at the top of my homepage.   Here are some scenes from Grand Canyons South Kaibab Trail.  I'm still new to the video editing and output processing, so it's not in HD yet.  Enjoy

Grand Falls

Went to Grand Falls on the Rez yesterday.  Took some pics.  Here's a few.
The falls are almost 200 feet high, the largest in Arizona.
The muddy water of the Little Colorado River is snowmelt from the White Mountains.
Grand Falls carves out the very start of the Little Colorado Gorge, a tributary canyon to Grand Canyon.

Leanna's Prom

Here's some portraits I did over the weekend.  It was my little sisters senior prom, and we had a quick photo shoot at the parents house beforehand.  Though it was a bit rushed, we did manage some good shots.

And a couple portraits of Leanna and Koa...

Fossil Springs

Made it down to fossil springs for a night this past weekend.  The weather was beautiful, the trees and wildflowers were starting to bloom, and the water-as it is year round-was a refreshing 72 degrees.  As always, some photos...

The water is crystal clear and blue-green from travertine deposits, which form natural dams, making some great swimming holes

Slaying some trout on the Colorado River

This past weekend, a few buddies and I hiked down to the Colorado River through Soap Creek Canyon to spend the night and do some fishing.  Here are some pics of the trip.  Check out the entire trip log at:
Austin caught a chuckwalla, who was not too happy about it

Cool rock (mahogany chert???)
We had to shimmy along a little ledge 20ft high.

smiley spider

This is a spider (cat-face spider, Araneus gemmoides) that posted up in my dad's office/garage/mancave for basically her whole existence.  She showed up, hung out, laid eggs, then died, all with a smile on her face...or abdomen, really.  Have a nice day!

Snow Cave

Took these a couple months ago, but since Flagtown is getting yet another dose of this el nino (translation: the nino) weather, i figure they are appropriate.  A few friends and i attempted to make a snow cave to spend a night in after nearly 5 ft of snow was dumped on Flagstaff.  We did manage to make a cave-but it was not exactly what i had had in mind.  I went into it hoping to make the type of snow cave you would make if you wanted to actually stay warm through the night-meaning a one or two person wormhole, built higher than the entrance hole to trap in heat.  This was not the case, as four friends joined me and we opted to make a "party" cave.  We built a giant snow mound, then dug it out.  It was pretty neat, and fit all of us comfortably.  Not exactly practical for sleeping in, and it was the coldest night of my life.  It was three degrees when i emerged from my sleeping bag and put on my frozen stiff pants and boots.  It was cold, but satisfying to know i did it.  3 degrees...  That was back in January.  The temp outside now?  15 degrees...i'm over it, flagstaff

grand canyon south kaibab

Made it to the Grand Canyon today.  For my journalism capstone class I am doing an internship for a website, mygrandcanyonpark.com.  I have a blog going there as well, and post triplogs and photos and random musings.  It is not live as of yet, but when it is i will post a link for all you devoted followers (hey mom!) to check out.  Here are some pics from today.  Saw a coyote and some antelope but no shots of that unfortunately.  hiked a ways down the south kaibab trail.  It was a snowy day for the most part, but cleared up nicely for a bit and provided some epicness.

Stormy North Rim
...livin on the edge--cedar ridge.  ate a delicious sandwich and had an epic pee here
